1980 년 Nikki Sixx 와 Tommy Lee 가 주축이 되어 캘리포니아 LA 에서 결성
초창기 멤버들인 Nikki Sixx , Tommy Lee , Vince Neil , Mick Mars 가 최전성기 시절의 라인업으로 80 년대를 초토화 시킴 (좋은 뜻에서나.. 나쁜 뜻에서나...)
깔끔하고 신나는 8 비트의 기타 리프와 퇴폐적 가사, 그리고 그들에게 영향을 주었던 레전드 Kiss 처럼 얼굴에 화장을 떡칠함은 물론 괴상하게 삐죽삐죽 세운 머리는 비주얼을 중시하던 그들에겐 트레이드 마크였다.
불량스럽게 화장도 진하게 하고, 껄렁껄렁대면서 외향적으로도 불량, 퇴폐의 이미지 그자체였지만 실제 그들이 했던 퍼포먼스 및 행동들은 더욱 더 불량스러웠다. (...) (멤버들의 마약, 술, 욕설, 폭력 문제는 끊임없이 사고를 만들어 냈다.)
의도했던 의도하지 않았던 당시 라이벌과도 같은 그룹 건스 앤 로지스 (Guns N Roses) 와 유난히 많이 엮였다. (주로 폭력 문제... 특히 빈스 닐하고 액슬 로즈)
드러머 타미 리는 당대 최고의 섹시 아이콘 파멜라 앤더슨과 결혼했는데 둘의 섹스 비디오가 유출돼서 한바탕 난리가 났었다. 물론 토미 리는 폭력 때문에 결혼생활이 순탄치 않았다.
머틀리 크루는 80 년대 크게 유행하던 LA 메탈의 상징과도 같은 그룹이었다. LA 메탈을 논할때 머틀리 크루를 빼놓고는 도저히 설명이 안된다.
통산 7000 만장 이상의 레코드 판매고 추정. 통산 12 곡의 빌보드 싱글 핫 100 기록
